Spoiler alert. This book would have been a 2 but I increased it to 3 because of the ending. This is not a favorite author of mine but my mother-in-law recommended. It was historical fiction love story set in 1650s England. I was rushing to finish to get it back to the library and was shocked that the ending was anything but tidy. It was a victory of familial and parental love over romantic love that I wasn’t at all expecting which actually made me like it more.

Tidelands begins Ms. Gregory’s newest Fairmile series. Tidelands begins on Midsummers Eve as Alinor Reekie hopes to meet the ghost of her husband, Zachary, who has deserted his family. If his ghost is met, Alinor will know she’s a widow and her life can move on. Alas, Alinor does meet a man but not her missing husband. Tidelands is set during the Cromwellian era in British history. The man she meets is a Catholic priest who she hides for a night before taking him on to his assignation. This act will change the course of her, and her children’s lives. Tidelands is a very descriptive, beautifully told story of a woman who is neither wife nor widow, who lives at the edge of Britain at a place neither land or sea, set in an ever changing climate.

I liked this book just how simply it has described the setting of rural England, how nicely she have described the characters. It's wonderful. The language is also simple anyone can read it without any problems. I think this book is be considered as an expository text. I liked the story how much it has described it. How we learn about the characters, it's wonderful. I didn't like the ending that much but it was a good ending atleast it didn't end in a cliffhanger. Overall it's a nice book talking about the rural England and it's problem. It tells us the problem of a single woman and her life in the island.

I enjoyed this but I found it very stressful also. It feels like the hammer is going to drop on these characters for the whole book and I found the suspense stressful.
Good story though
