This book is not fast paced, it is not full of action or drama for the sake of drama. What it is to me is an interesting story with a good mix of characters. They didn't fully flesh out for me but yet I felt I knew them, knew of them, have known people similar throughout my life. It might take place in the 1600s but the personalities, prejudices, and beliefs are still around. Sadly I live in a country that has 1/2 the nation pushing us back to these less enlightened times filled with superstition and ignorance.
I'm not sure I would call this cozy historical fiction, but it's really close. Cozy in the sense that I fell into the story. That i enjoyed opening the book and knowing more. That I looked for opportunities to read for just a few extra minutes every day. Cozy in that I could see, smell, and taste the world around them. That I was an observer, safely ensconced in my favorite chair with a cat in my arms.
This isn't feel good cozy, it's more escape and enjoy reading cozy. A well written story cozy.
Anyway, I had planned to get through my TBR pile by picking a random read each time I finish a book. Literally I plan to pull the next book out of a bowl (yes, I wrote them all on little pieces of paper and stuck them in a container) BUT after finishing Tidelands, I looked at all the little pieces of paper and I knew I couldn't wait till book two randomly gets picked. I must keep reading! And so I shall. Dark Tides, Here I come!

4,5 stars. Slow to get going but in the end I enjoyed it so so much.

Love love love. Alinor is one of the best FMCs I’ve read in her own quiet way.
While I skim read a bit of the extensive descriptions of everyday working life for the women, I appreciate the detail so much. It’s the account’s of women’s history that go untold.
The romantic in me wanteda happy end for James and Alinor but oh my god I felt the female rage of Alys at the end and I am pleased it went the way it did at the very end. James sucks, he’s very bleugh. Like obviously just in love with her beauty and is turned off by the reality of her situation. Puts himself in mortal peril to save the King, but not Alinor? Yea he sucks.
I wish he’d been better 😭 I like escaping into fiction to find book boyfriends but James was so much more like real men lol.

This could have been a good book, but it was so repetitive, the characters frankly so stupid, and the ending so stressful that I actually kind of hated it.
3.5 Thanks to the publisher via NetGalley for this free digital copy.
I had a hard time getting into this book at first, I just wasn't sure where it was going. Once I kept reading though I came to enjoy it.
Tidelands tells the story of Alinor and her life with her two children on a poor stretch of land marked by the tides. She comes across James who is a spy for the fallen King Charles. Their lives meet and they begin a long drawn out romance. All this happens while she is dealing with changes within her family regarding her daughter and son.
I did find a few parts of this book to be a little unbelievable. The character of Alys started out as a somewhat believable 13 year old, then changed her tone to that of a woman in her 30s overnight. I actually came to loath this character and all the mean scheming things she did. She was redeemed at the end though when she ended up taking care of Alinor.
The ending was not what I expected at all and I was actually disappointed. Now that I remember this is part of a series it makes more sense. Still not the ending I was hoping for.
This book turned out to be a quick read. Despite the few things I did not like, I was drawn to the story and will likely read the next in the series.

I found the descriptions of everyday life during the 1600s very interesting. In fact they were more interesting than the plot and character development in this book.
It was very repetitive in parts and I found myself skipping to the end of some of the dialogue passages as they were so repetitive (how many times did Alys need to reiterate to her mother that a pregnancy would ruin her chances of a good marriage?). The whole book could have done with a good editor.
I kept waiting for something to go wrong for Alinor, she seemed to have a lot of good fortune even though she was a very poor deserted woman. But everything kept turning out fine. Finally in the last 10 pages we got to see some action. But even that was flawed. And I'm left confused. Why did Alys leave her husband? I'm not going to continue with this series.
