Good ol Richard. Oh how I love thee. I've not read much of Richard Laymon so far but I intend to put that right as soon as possible. He reminds me very much of a well loved old slasher movie, or the best of Hammer Horror as seen through a few decades of rose-tinted nostalgia.

This version was put together by his daughter from his original writings after the original publisher messed up the editing when it was first published. I've not seen the original version but absolutely loved this one. It's not overly original at first glance, being a kind of Hills Have Eyes type of story, but it certainly does manage to surprise as the story moves on and has some very nice little twists and touches that I didn't expect. The main characters are portrayed quite well, or at least, well enough anyway, and I'd heartily recommend this to anyone who either wants to try some Richard Laymon or who has a weird love for old, atmospheric slasher movies. The sex isn't actually nearly as graphic as I'd thought it was going to be and somehow even the violence isn't up there with some of the more modern novels you get these days, so it fits right in with that classic slasher feel.

Anyway, very good read. Highly recommended.

WHAT? ARE YOU KIDDING ME? I feel like this review should be in all caps because of how outrageously ridiculous this book is. Somehow I’m not mad about it though. Just shocked at the events that transpired. I’m not sure why this is a 4 star read given the fact that it was just ridiculous, but I found myself so captivated and drawn in to this crazy story.
A strong start with the interesting concept of a human-krull agreement. The humans bring the Krulls sacrifices and everyone is happy (kind of)
But it doesn’t end there. Robbins goes crazy and released the sacrifices. WHY Robbins? Just leave without her! Lord. The dynamics of the groups became so incredibly interesting and I was just really captivated with it all. Landers is a sicko but I was so intrigued by his chapters because of it. The introduction of ‘The Devil’ was really unique because it added a history to the Krulls and made us realize that there’s something even more dangerous than them.
Not to mention the fact that this concept is just really terrifying. A community of feral human (ish) creatures living in the woods hunting humans. Using tools.
I think it could’ve done with less sexuality, as it often didn’t add anything of note, was almost a filler. Beyond that I have few qualms and was very satisfied with the ending.
Great mindless book!

I'm very conflicted about how I felt about this book. I read the original 1981 version, with the stuff cut out of it, and even then it was still very disturbing. Male horror authors just can't resist torturing their female characters can they. Despite the overuse of sexual assault scenes and the rapey vibes from literally every male character (including Lander, he thought about his teen daughter having sex way too much), I couldn't put the book down and stayed up until 4 am and finished it after 3 hours. Good premise and pacing, wish male authors would find a way to write without putting every one of their female characters (including children) through rape and torture.

This is the restored and uncut version of The Woods Are Dark. It was a fast paced read with so many horrifying things going on throughout that I finished it in record time. Definitely a must read for Richard Layman fans.

This is a tough book to "enjoy"; it's incredibly violent and none of the characters are very likable. But it is scary; no matter what you may think of Laymon's abilities as a writer, his stories always manage to scare the living bejesus out of me. Trapped in the woods with a bunch of cannibalistic lunatics hunting me down has got to rank up there with one of the WORST ways to buy the farm. I can definitely see this one getting made into a movie. Pretty intense, but Laymon has written better.

I feel like every time I want to give Richard Laymon credit for a good sequence....he instantly follows it up with a sexual assault sequence effectively killing my goodwill.

Only 4 rumps in this one....it moves at a quick pace....but....it's not good.
