I was so scared after reading
The Murder of Rodger Ackeroyd
that I was about to be burned again by a lovable, tired of everyone's bulshit Agatha Christie 1st person narrator-- but luckily Len was indeed Just Some Guy (tm).

The fantastic debut of Miss Marple. I love that the story is told through the vicars eyes, he is quite a funny man. And the supporting cast, including Miss Marple is stellar.

It does have a playfulness you don't often find in mystery novels that was enjoyable. I definitely didn't predict the ending. However, sometimes it was hard to follow. I lost track of some of the characters. The ending felt a bit rushed as well.

The real charm of this one was in getting a glimpse of a true old fashioned sleepy little town rife with gossip and small town interpersonal dynamics. As for the actual mystery I personally found it far less satisfying than the Poirot stories I’ve read so far, I felt that there were much too many red herring type “clues” that were all too conveniently explained away at the very last second, which is always a bit frustrating when the entire fun of an intricate mystery is figuring out how all the clues must fit together. I also have to say I prefer Poirot’s eccentricities and funny little remarks to Miss Marple’s “nice old lady” character. That being said, it’s so funny to me how Agatha Christie grew to detest Poirot, despite how lovable her readers found him:

“By 1930, Agatha Christie found Poirot "insufferable", and, by 1960, she felt that he was a "detestable, bombastic, tiresome, ego-centric little creep"”.
