This is a great series for younger kids to read about natural disasters and the resiliency that so many people have. In this one, a young boy is storm chasing with one of his heroes when things get too dangerous, so they head home, into the path of the tornado that wiped out the city of Joplin. There are vivid descriptions of the inside of the tornado and also descriptions of an injured man. There aren't any descriptions of death, but you feel the heaviness of knowing that this storm killed so many and displaced so many more.

Great series that introduces young readers to what it was like to live through a certain tragic event. In this case a tornado. Here's a full review I did of this book: http://www.compassbookratings.com/reviews/index.php/review/view/1895

Another book about a boy separated from his parents during a historical disaster. This one was a bit different though, because it had scientific elements also. I’m sure that kids will love another action-packed I Survived book! And seriously - in the back of the books, Ms. Tarshis says she wrote about this event because survivors asked her to. If readers ask her to write about a girl, do you think she would???

Such a harrowing story, but with a determined and brave young man at its center.
I loved all of the great information about tornadoes and how to prepare and survive them. Thank you, Lauren, for making these stories accessible to young readers!

I've always been fascinated by tornadoes ever since I was very young (I even had one of those HUGE interactive weather books that I read every night). This was my first foray into the I Survived series, and after reading this book I can see why it's so popular. I thought it did well balancing the fictionalized account with actual facts from that disastrous May day in 2011. Definitely recommended for the elementary aged set- especially those fascinated with weather!

Read this for a reading prompt that was “disastrous weather”. I had always been curious about this series since it’s so popular with kids during the book fair. I understand why. It was quick paced and very informative. I’ll definitely read others in this series.
