informative

Audiobook - narrator Therese Plummer. Good narration. Again, similar to Japan Tsunami audiobook, I would prefer a male narrator since the main character is male. Otherwise I find it hard to remember the main character is male.

3.5 stars. Interesting that this one, set in 2011 like the Tsunami, also has a military theme with the 11-year-old main character having a 20-year-old Navy Seal brother who is on a secret mission. I can see why kids do like this series because the action starts very early and there are lots of high points of action and close calls. I am glad the author is able to twist the disaster in to a satisfying positive conclusion. I enjoy the real fact section at the end (read by the author Lauren Tarshis) and the timeline of events.

As a former Joplin resident and someone who lost their apartment in the tornado, I can say that this book is accurate yet still appropriate for the younger crowd. Tarshis clearly did her research and doesn't sensationalize just for more readers, but paints this vividly and honestly, being respectful towards the many that lost homes and lives.
As a librarian, I am confident that the second I put this on the shelf, there will be a hold list immediately.

MY 8YO TOLD ME TO READ THIS AND THEN CAUGHT ME OUT WITH A POP QUIZ WHEN I HADN’T BUT NOW . . . BRING IT ON!

It's absolutely insane to image that horrific events like these did happen, yet heart-warming to see communities stinking together through it all. This book taught me so many things I've never known! To whomever is reading this, here's some knowledge for you:

- Tornados have very high air pressure (?), therefore when near them your ears may pop, like on an airplane
- Tornados make sounds like hissing and screeching
- Animals have very distinctive hearing, they can even hear and sense tornados coming!
- If there is a tornado in your area, try to get inside! Wear bike and motorcycle helmets to protect your head from flying objects, and get into the closest level to the ground- wherever you are (make sure it's inside). Stay away from walls, cover your head and if possible, get under a heavy sturdy table.

I can't wait to read more of this series as I've already learned so much!
