Years and years ago I read Goodbye Tsugumi by Banana Yoshimoto and thought it was okay, because I was young and uncultured. Now I understand just how good Yoshimoto’s writing is!!!
The stories in Asleep are so thematically tight and strong, I was floored. As for the writing, I could tell the translator stuck close to the original Japanese, and though most of the time that bothers me, it didn’t here. Yoshimoto’s writing is so ethereal and spooky, if the book was more heavily localized, it’d lose some of that.
TW, if you are sensitive to infidelity, I would not read this. All the stories mention some sort of cheating.
