4.5 Stars - A delightful story! I loved the melding of our world with the fantasy world. I really liked both Quinn and Val. There was action, drama, danger and romance.

Update:

On second reading, while I still loved the story and characters, the head hopping got to me. I don’t know if it was my ebook formatting that didn’t delineate from one person to another but it sometimes got confusing.

Enjoyable story and plot, where an experiment gone wrong has resulted in magical creatures from other dimensions finding themselves on our earth. It let the author include pretty much any magical creature she wanted without having to explain further. It does get a bit silly in places, but in a good way, imo.

It did seem like the denouement went on too long; this seemed primarily an excuse to squeeze in more sex scenes rather than tie up any loose ends. I guess if that's your thing, you won't mind, but I was ready for it to end before then.

The book opens with the elf MC having a failed hook up with a prostitute. He then laments on the loss of his harem from his home world. I’m not a fan of other person content, and definitely not a fan of poly other person content. This book is just not for me.

I read this as I hoped it would fill the void left by the end of Offbeat Crimes, but something was missing in this. While there were a few funny bits (Groof the boggle in Central Park who love chili dogs is one example of comic relief) most of the story was pretty dark. The build up between Valerian and Quinten was practically non-existent, Val falls fast and Quinn is hesitant because of sexual abuse in his past. There's very little sexual tension, just a horny elf and a relationship-shy human wizard. I doubt I'll finish the series, the characters featured in the rest I wasn't very fond of.

Tags- Abuse: Quinn was in a foster care/group home and was sexually assaulted and forced to prostitute himself, also his father killed his mother and burned the house down; Mental Illness: Valerian is depressed and thinks about suicide often; PTSD: Quinn suffers due to his abuse and what his father did, Val suffers due to his entry on Earth when his horse died impaled on a statue;

I enjoyed this a lot more than I expected to, lol. Why? I honestly don't know what I expected, but this story grabbed me and wouldn't let go!

The authors have created an interesting concept in this book. It's a definite alternate reality kind of story. Our world but one where magical creatures suddenly appear on a one-way ticket. They need to integrate themselves into our society with varying degrees of success. I think this is the concept that surprised me so much; I didn't expect it to work as well as it did. Add to that engaging and interesting characters, a fast-paced, well thought out plot and you have a story that I struggled to put down. In fact, I started the next one as soon as I finished this one... *grin*

I'd agree with 3.75 stars. I enjoyed the world they build, but did not really connect with the characters. I liked the world so much I will probably read the next book.

Let me heal your rape with my magic elf dick, okay.

Basically, the world-building was interesting and a bunch of the characters were interesting but no one got nearly enough development (especially not Tenzin or Matthew or Nestor or Sinistrus, all of whom had the possibility of being wildly more fascinating than our pretty boy protagonists). The more interesting plot points were glossed over. I wanted this to be an urban fantasy with queer characters instead of pretty elf boning while the world nearly dies in the background.

Three stars, for much mourned potential.
