This novel takes place in the not-so-distant future when the US is involved in a second civil war after fossil fuels are outlawed. An interesting enough premise, and a likable young character, but she later became very difficult for me to relate to when the desire for revenge drove her to horrific actions. I could understand her fury, but could not understand just how detached she seemed from the "issues" of the war, (did the issues matter to her at all?), yet she played such a huge role in the war's outcome and aftermath. She truly demonized the other side and there seemed to be no consideration of right or wrong at all.

As a side note, interesting to note that the author originally is from Egypt. I found myself, as I was reading about this fictional war, thinking quite a bit about the mid-East conflict, terrorist attacks vs the West, and the history in the region of suicide bombing. There seemed to be some obvious mirroring of issues around revenge and becoming a martyr in this novel.

The book was not quite what I was expecting based on the description in Goodreads, but I still enjoyed it. The author's premise of how our current human behavior of indifference to climate and energy shape a dystopian future was very interesting in my opinion. Throw in that based on our current politics I do not have a hard time accepting a plot where our country fractures again into civil war. My only issue would be that I don't see how a few southern states could fight a stand still war with the north for decades with such a small population base. Well, that and I didn't agree with the narrator's actions at the end. This kept me from giving it five stars.

An engrossing tale of mental strength and perseverance in situations most of can't imagine set in a near future dystopian US.

Very odd book. I found it very confusing, and it is either not well thought out or not well expressed.

Well written, if depressing, vision of the upcoming American Civil War so many demagogues, asshats and buffoons say they want.
