What a fascinating read from LaRocca. I'll probably be thinking about this one for a while, as the themes and actual meaning are coming to my slowly. But while reading the book I really enjoyed the dark, claustrophobic tone that the setting and writing set up for us. It did it's job, for sure.

This novella was unnerving. Following the violent death of her father after leaving the home for food, Mara's mother invites a strajge guest into the house. The part of this book that held the most significance to me was Mara's harrowing longing to be loved by her mother, someone who shows her nothing but cruelty and shaming. This is a dark read and puts you in the midst of a strange, twisted dark fantasy. It's not an easy read by any means, and I'm still quite unnerved by some of the scenes - which I suspect was the point of such a book.
