I love Eric LaRocca’s voice in his writing. He truly knows how to turn a phrase and how to get to the emotional depths of a character and situation. But for all my love of Eric’s work, this novella left me wanting something. I don’t want to share too much, but I will say that there are characters within the story whose identities create a confusion and disconnect that ultimately distracts from the beautifully heart breaking story that is being told. I wanted to love this book. I truly loved the story that was being told, but in the end, the choice of characters left me confused.

This book was insane to read. The imagery was so intense and very descriptive.

Don’t read this if you have a weak stomach. Lots of wading through raw sewage.

I refuse to say a bad word about LaRocca. On that note, why is this book like an inch and a half taller than their other ones?

I don't know what to say except this book is weird and disturbing and not in a way I find pleasing. It feels like there's some deeper meaning that I didn't really grasp. To be honest, I just wanted it to be over. At least it was short I guess?

I have no idea how to actually rate this. I’m pretty new to horror but what the actual f*** did I just read?! This was just bizarre. I’m simultaneously grossed out, hating what I just read, but also like damn… that was a good story.
challenging dark tense fast-paced
Plot or Character Driven: Character
Strong character development: No
Loveable characters: No
Diverse cast of characters: Complicated
Flaws of characters a main focus: Yes

I am not entirely sure if my 3 stars is a GOOD three stars or BAD 3 stars. I THINK I get the message, maybe? What a bizarre, gross book about grief. I kinda wish it had been longer so I could know more about the setting and how it got to be that way. It was an okay quick horror read, but I have read better.
