Im surprised at just how many people disliked this book, I thought it was very intriguing and the direction kept me spellbound. There is a HEAVY amount of prose so that is a valid turnoff but otherwise I thought the themes and story presented were great

The girl uses her imagination of a circus act to help through a traumatic situation. Dark, gruesome and very weird. I really liked the ending about how she rewrote the unicorn story for her newborn brother, symbolizing the end of generational trauma and abuse.
The whole time I thought we were in just a weird fantastical post apocalyptic world, but once you find out they were all humans, makes me rethink the whole story and it’s way more disturbing. <\spoiler>
Dark, fantastical, and evocative, this novella is a wound you can't stop scratching open again and again.

Eric LaRocca, as always, is creatively great. Eric also gets into amazing, almost lyrical grooves with descriptions, and I eat up all of it, and this book has plenty of those moments. That said, this wasn't my FAVORITE story from them, in no way is it bad, it honestly just wasn't the story for me. I know this book is most definitely FOR someone, but for me it just isn't the kind of story that excites me. To preface the next point, I also am 100% fine with disturbing or "wrong" content being in stories (I was perfectly fine with all the themes in Eric's last two novellas) but some of the themes and story beats in this one just wasn't something I personally wanted to read about. Which isn't to say it shouldn't have been written about, I just tend to not lean into what this book had to offer. Overall I didn't hate the book at all, I think it still holds Eric's charm, and I'm always up to read what he has to offer, at the end of the day this just wasn't the story for me.
