I understand the concept of what this story is supposed to portray, but man it has to be one of the weirdest books I’ve ever read.

what in the Gregor the Overlander, James and the Giant Peach, and Pan’s Labyrinth is going on here

I had no clue what any of this mess meant. It was confusing and the only insight you get is at the end in a few throw away sentences. The imagery just didn’t work for me, it only confused me and made me wonder what level of reality I was supposed to be working on with this book. The worst part is I cannot even derive any meaning from this drivel. The only benefit to this book is that it was short and only wasted a few hours of my life.

a story that doesn’t know itself, pretending to be more intelligent than it is but lacking the impetus to actually achieve that - saved by some occasional smart prose that dwindles as you progress

Holy shit what a ride. I ate through this story! It's been a while since a book made me sit in silence after reading but thats all I could do while caught between several emotions.

I guessed the reason for the Mothers hatred before we actually found out but it changed nothing about the impact.

The way Mara rewrote the story of the lost unicorn for her little brothers life as a show of breaking the abusively toxic family cycle nearly had me in tears.

This was the first book I read from this author, but it's definitely not the last!!

Unfortunately I thought the story and imagery were strong and vivid, but the writing was overall pretty weak.
