This is my favorite Eric LaRocca work yet. The grief and horror on display is so good.
idk what the fuck i just read as per reaction of larocca’s writing, but it is terrifying in its unusualness and its likeness towards a reality of grief. the gore was just surprising EVERY TIME. once again, i am horrified and thinking about this forever.

There's a lot to unpack here. If you're willing to sit through the fever dream of really weird shit I really think the payoff is worth it.
Ugh, so beautifully written and wonderfully weird. Gave me mother! vibes. I finished this all in one sitting I got so sucked into the madness it felt like a fever dream lol

I read and enjoyed Things Have Gotten Worse Since We Last Spoke, which I believe is Eric LaRocca's most popular work. It's what lead me to pick this one up (and another sits waiting in my kindle library and might wait for a long time now lol).
Unfortunately, this was not good. It's writing is very simplistic and seems like it's trying too hard to be poetic. It definitely has lines that you can tell were written, with intent to be quoted. The pacing was off. A lot of people describe this one as "fast paced" but I'd disagree. It's under 200 pages but still felt like a bit of a slog.
My biggest gripe with this one is that it felt genuinely pointless. It relied on very cheap fear tactics; like using spiders, roaches, etc. Also there was a part where the main character--a fifteen year old girl--gets her period while sleeping that was just vulgar and unnecessary. It felt like it was hamfisted in there just to be disgusting. Worst of all, this book lacks editing. Like it feels as though it didn't get nearly enough second passes--if any. Very repetitive word choices (which happens, there's only so many words, but in a short story...) and toward the end it felt incredibly rushed instead of like it hit a climax.

i’m sorry!!! i appreciate their work and can understand how people love it, but it’s not my horror style unfortunately. i loved things have gotten worse since we last spoke but the other two i’ve read aren’t for me :// not a bad book AT ALL though!!! i will continue to read from eric larocca.
