I have not been impressed with LaRocca so far, and this book doesn’t change that much. It is, however, more disturbing than the other two works I’ve read (THGWSWLS & You’ve Lost a Lot of Blood). The setting is gloomy and the fallout quite nightmarish. In fact, this feels like you’re reading a nightmare.

But not in a good way. Meaning I enjoy horror that evokes morbid fascination, like Dennis Cooper’s work, or cozy affection, like a 70s haunted house story. This book does neither and left me feeling depressed and unreal. Not in a profound or impressive way. Just in a crappy way.

Maybe that’s the sort of thing you’re looking for.

The twists are a bit botched in execution, and the ending could have used another surprise. I didn’t care much for the characters. And the whole plot is pretty easy to predict once you’re about a third of the way in.

Despite all this, I still want to read one of his short story collections, maybe because the covers are so pretty.
