A *lot* weirder than Things Have Gotten Worse Since Last We Spoke. I really loved the magical realism aspects and - shockingly! - I liked when the curtain was lifted in the last chapter as well. LaRocca's an excellent writer and threads a lot of tricky needles in a relatively compact space. I did find it surprisingly dense, but I'm so glad stuff like this is getting published.

i really fucking disliked this for some reason.
the execution was bland and amateurish, and the concept itself was not comprehensive or interesting enough to warrant being crafted into an entire text. the entire work itself felt like larocca had a small, cheap piece of cloth that he was trying to stretch out to make an extravagant garment; an ordeal doomed from conception. i am certain that i, in my exact current state, could rewrite this story better with just a single draft.
unfortunate that i paid money for this and also unfortunate that i have a 3rd eric larocca novel sitting on my shelf. i PRAY it is more like things have gotten worse since we last spoke than this one was.

Definitely my favorite so far of LaRocca's books! Depicting the circus performers as creatures added a surreal element to the bleak story. It felt like a dark fairy tale - unpleasant but morbidly fascinating.
