Can't get over all the blurbs saying this book is funny. Sweet and sometimes amusing, sure, but the "funny" bits are mostly just sad.

Eleanor Oliphant is so unlike anyone I have ever met, but her experience with loneliness is so deeply relevant because it echoes that of humanity. In the modern world, loneliness has become an aspect of daily life and, in some ways, a definition of what it means to be an adult. But Eleanor's development through the book - her slowly coming out of her shell - is proof that humans are not meant to be this way. We gravitate towards one another, despite everything, because it is in our nature, and we are all we have. Love does not have to be transactional. Did you know a healed femur once evidenced human civilization? Our survival depends on and necessitates helping one another, and healing requires a community. When I read about everything Eleanor had been through, I wondered how she would ever find peace again, how she would ever forget. By the end, I had hope - she is not alone. We are not alone.

I loved this book overall and read it literally in maybe a night and a half!! I did have some small critiques with how the author handled some of Eleanor's trauma. I'm also overall not a huge fan of the "makeover" trope :( BUT I'm so happy with how Raymond and Eleanor's relationship was handled. There was a particular scene when Raymond was talking about his ex girlfriend that gave me a major red flag, but it was a dialogue issue if anything and I don't think it reflected his character in the rest of the book. Generally an interesting read!

I picked this up from the library since many people had recommended it online. However, after that I saw that many others didn't like it so I avoided reading it till the last possible minute which was a waste since it was so good. I really enjoyed eleanors development. Raymond was really nice and I think this book tackled with such heavy subjects fairly well. Overall it was quite enjoyable imo.

i loved the character development and the discussions of mental health in this story. certainly didn’t expect abuse to play such a big part.

A very smooth read, quite gripping, didn't take too long

Pros:
- the writing flowed nicely and made it easy to read. The dialogue always felt realistic and the story carried along nicely.
- it also had quite an original premise which was executed well and I got caught up in seeing how it would all turn out.
and I'm glad it turned out well

- the side characters, Raymond, Laura, Bob, etc. were all well developed and made it feel like a little slice of life.

Cons:
- Didn't really love Eleanor (though the name didn't help) and while feeling vaguely bad for her, i definitely didn't 'sob and sob' like the one reviewer did. Some bits did hit too hard and just made me feel bad. The tone really reminded me of 'A man called Ove' and it was given to me by the same person. Unfortunately I don't think I'm a massive fan of this type of book really - the reality is too painful for me, too personal.

So I think my main disappoint was that I didn't feel much for the book and I won't be reading it again I'm afraid, though it was good for a break after the complicated 'Ninth house' book.

This book made me cry, multiple times, but it also made me smile
by ending on such a hopeful note
