I don’t know how a book can be both lighthearted and deeply emotional and dark but this book accomplished it. It was the first book in awhile that I didn’t want to stop reading and made me stay up to read more. The relationships were pure, the reflection and growth was inspiring, and I loved cheering on Eleanor.

I think I read this book right when I needed it. Though it features heavy subject matter, I think it places the emphasis on the journey through the dark experiences people have and not just the event itself. I liked the depiction of Eleanor’s therapy- how it’s not just a straight forward “you’re cured now!” and how she works through her journey.

I also really liked the way it handled Raymond trying to give Eleanor information before she was ready for it and the emphasis she places on this being her journey and that she will learn it when she’s ready for it. Though I really loved their friendship in general- the way it grew throughout the story was so enjoyable to read and it truly was such a pure friendship.

The way loneliness is portrayed here was so powerful to me and the way we so often take things for granted- like simply having someone to speak to over a weekend. Self worth was also a big theme and not attaching it to the traumatic events that happen to us.

Though there was a “mystery” of sorts in this book, and some parts of it were easy to guess at, it’s not a thriller and so I don’t feel that takes away from the strength of the reveals.

I’m so glad I thrifted this randomly one day- I will definitely be rereading this book.

Wow. Wow. WOW. Mind absolutely blown. I had this on my tbr list for I think more than two years and cannot believe it took me so long to get started. The themes of the book are quite dark (mental health, abuse, childhood neglect, violence, loneliness,…), maybe that’s what held me back, but wow, it was so well done, so lighthearted and funny at times. It made me laugh and shed a tear and as someone whose mother tongue isn’t English I also have quite an impressive list of new vocabulary now. Such well written characters and an amazing story (I wanted to Google and research Eleanor’s case at several points during the book only to remind myself that it’s fiction). Wow.

I struggled to get into this book intially; I found Eleanor to be a challenging and judgmental narrator. That said, as I approached the halfway mark it was clear I was supposed to be uncomfortable, and that Eleanor herself was uncomfortable in all aspects of her life. The style of narration evolved as the book progressed - as Eleanor stopped seeing herself as an island and learned to rely on the people around her. Ultimatetly, it was an uplifting read, reminding the reader that friends can be found in unlikely places and that it's never too late to make changes for the better.
