Raymond is the only good man

on a serious note, it was nice to see someone get better.

I took one of my hands in the other, tried to imagine what it would feel like if it was another person’s hand holding mine. There have been times when I felt that I might die of loneliness. People sometimes say they might die of boredom, that they’re dying for a cup of tea, but for me, dying of loneliness is not hyperbole. When I feel like that, my head drops and my shoulders slump and I ache, I physically ache, for human contact—I truly feel that I might tumble to the ground and pass away if someone doesn’t hold me, touch me.

I had so many things to say about this book and yet, once I’ve finished this book I am literally out of words. Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine but I’m not. I fell in love with the inner workings of Eleanor’s mind. As quirky as it is, it was also fragile and wrecked. There are some books that needs to be adapted into a movie but not this book. This book needs to be consumed word by word following Eleanor’s monologues closely by text and not any kind of digital media to give it justice. Gail Honeyman has given us the privilege to observe Eleanors POV from inside her mind and I’m glad to be in it.

This book broke my heart and put it back together, but I will still need a few days to recover.

Maybe I'm reading into it way too much, but the blurbs on my copy of the book described it as "incredibly funny" and "satisfyingly quirky." They called Eleanor a "new curmudgeon to love." I think describing this book as such does the character of Eleanor a disservice. She is traumatized and is (I suspect, though it is never outright stated in the text) more than a little neurodivergent.

I sincerely hope that Reese Witherspoon is as kind to Eleanor in the impending movie adaptation as Raymond, Sammy, Maria, and Bob are to her in this book.
