Nothing happens, and it repeats itself. The writing is unnecessarily bloated but not in an interesting way

In all honesty, I think I am being a bit too harsh but it didn’t convince me so much. The book is divided in three parts and during the first two, I was flying through it but then, in part three, I sort of lost interest. I found myself checking how many pages I had left, which is never a good sign.
Maybe if the first part had been the dullest, I would be giving it four stars …
On a brighter note, I know this is fiction but there were many things I’ve learned so I take it as a learning opportunity.
I do want to read more of McBride’s works so I think that’s a good thing!

First the positive - The narrator was very good and made this book easier to get through. The book led to a very lively book club discussion, especially in relation to current events. There was racism, anti-Semitism, sexism, light skinned immigrants who could not wait to assimilate so they could be close to whiteness and power, immigrants who turned around and discriminated against the more newly arrived immigrants, etc.

Now the not-so-positive - If I could describe this book any way, it's that it was a jack of all trades, and a master of none. It tried tackle so many themes, and SO MANY characters, but did so superficially. Don't get me going on the 1/2 dozen story lines that were introduced, and then left hanging. And the ending was just unsatisfying. And last, but not least, #justiceforchona

I don't think I have the patience for this book or the desire for this type of story right now

Dnf at 80% just couldn't care anymore. Story seemed to ignore the plot completely
