SPOILER ALERT:
The dog dies. I cried. That was also the most emotion I had throughout the entire, longwinded book. I was interested in her story, but found myself extremely bored by the excruciatingly long details of courtship. Also, a bit grossed out by a 47yo man courting a 17yo girl. This wasn't a bad book, just not the book for me.

Weird. I couldn’t get into until the later half when it was all titanic. But I AM and have always been fascinated by the stories of Titanic.
Standard print from the library
This was a fascinating look at that young Mrs. Astor who gets approximately 12 seconds of screen time in the film Titanic. ("His little wifey there, Madeline, is my age and in a delicate condition. See how she's trying to hide it? QUITE the scandal.") This is historical fiction, but I choose to believe that despite the cringe-y age gap between Madeline and JJ, theirs was a true love story. Very sweet and easy to read.

I read this book for a book club, I would never choose historical fiction to read for fun. However, reading about the Astors was somewhat interesting - especially the last 25% where they discuss the Titanic. Throughout the whole book I felt so bad for Maddy, she seemed so alone and I’m glad our society has moved past arranged marriages and marrying simply for status.
Probably NOT the best choice for anyone like me with a husband on hospice care. All the same, I couldn’t put it down or look away. The love story was too compelling.

Good historical read- wanted more about her later years. A true love story that gets overlooked by tragedy.
2.5 ⭐️ The Titanic has always fascinated me so I was excited about this book, however, it was just painfully slow in my opinion. I appreciate the research that goes into historical fiction and enjoy comparing it to nonfiction info I find online. I almost gave up several times but am glad I finished as the last 30% or so held my attention better.
