I agree with those who feel that this was an okay.
I enjoyed the letters Madeline wrote to the son her husband would never meet, but was disappointed in how the book ended - the birth. I was expecting the author to write about The Second Mrs. Astor’s life post Titanic. What happened to her? How did she rebuild her life? Did she find a new love? In my opinion, too much attention was placed on the parties and the opulent lifestyle of the Astors.

As a child in the 90’s, I definitely went through a Titanic phase. I wasn’t allowed to watch *the* movie (I was only 11, after all) but I read every book I could get my hands on and distinctly remember going to an exhibit in Memphis. So reading this story about the second Mrs. Astor felt like a nostalgic trip to my own fascination with one of the greatest maritime disasters in history. I honestly got very teary-eyed learning about the romance between the Colonel and his young wife, and especially at their parting on that fateful night. Who knows what their love could have been should it have had a chance to bloom into something rich with growth that comes from the passage of time?
I didn’t fall for the love story in the way I was hoping so the ending didn’t tug at my heart strings, it just made me generally depressed :(

I am not going to lie. The first 2/3 of this book was very slow. It was really good, just slow. Once they were onboard the Titanic, it became everything I hoped it would be. I was able to see how the first 2/3 subconsciously led to me being entirely connected to Madeline and her relationship with J.J. Astor.

The writing style is great. I did think the first half was a bit slower than the 2nd half. It was a different perspective from the standard jack and rose story. This story felt real to me. It gave me goosebumps and made me tear up.
Graphic: Death of parent
Moderate: Death, Grief, Pregnancy
Minor: Animal death
I wanted to love this. I barely finished it. I just could not fall in love with the characters. No matter how hard I tried. It was a lot of complaining, not enough story to build a relationship with the characters.
