Graphic: Death
I recently discovered this book in a Little Free Library and decided to give it a chance. It’s not the type of book I usually read, but since part of it takes place on the Titanic and was free, I figured I had nothing to lose. I’m so glad I decided to read it! The romance between John and Madeleine was sweet. Even though I knew how the story would end for Astor, I was still brought to tears as the Titanic sank. Madeleine was a strong young woman.

This was eye-rolling lame and terribly boring. Her infatuation with the old rich dude was gross and her naive stupidity had me gagging. I was hoping the titanic part at the end would make it more interesting, but that was not the case. I didn’t care that the old rich husband died nor did I care about the paparazzi trials & tribulations. Summary: just skip this one.
I was so excited to start this advance reader’s edition book,The Second Mrs. Astor, by Shana Abé from the minute I opened the mail. Much of the book is written as a letter from Madeleine Force Astor to her son from the infamous Jack Astor. The first page will draw you in immediately - to learn more about the love story between these lovely individuals who didn’t let gossip of their age difference of three decades stop them from experiencing true love.
We all know the tragic story of the Titanic, but how much do we know of the REAL people who were passengers aboard the Titanic? Well- now you can learn about two of those passengers in this historical fiction book that you will love. It definitely left me wanting to learn more stories about other Titanic passengers. I even appreciated the resource suggestions at the end of the book to continue reading on this topic.
Thank you so much #kensingtonbooks https://www.kensingtonbooks.com/ for the advance reader’s edition of #TheSecondMrsAstor
To you book lovers out there - you will get through this book quickly and find yourself rooting for Madeleine and Jack. Not a fan of historical fiction? You will be after this book!
Happy reading! Don’t forget to add it to your “want to read” bookshelf

So I usually hate books like this, ones about the Titanic, ones that are only love stories, ones the at are set in a period like this one. But this book moved at such a perfect pace, was so realistic, and the structure was so interesting, being partly letters to her newborn son, that I loved it. I couldn't put it down. The ending was so sad and emotional, and I really felt like Madeleine was a strong woman through all that she went through. I was surprised at how much of Madelines strength shone through, especially as she was babies and protected a lot of the time. It was just a series of moments in her life where Abe didn't explicitly list how she felt half the time, it was just felt through the scene and Abe nudged the reader in the right direction. Really amazingly done.
