I really did not care for the Hitler chapter. Other than that, I found it mildly entertaining.

Reading this with the shows soundtrack playing really is an out of body experience

I have mixed feelings about this. The concept is still great, but the execution is lacking. The book begins with more time travel that fails to add anything to the overall narrative. Then we finally move forward with the beginning of the end, with an unnecessary introduction by a 4th wall breaking Akira. This part of the story is great and really could have been fleshed out more. When we get to the final chapter, though, it is jarring. We are told that it's now 20 years later, we get scant exposition with no dialog, and just a series of splash pages. They look nice, but it's anticlimactic. The resolution is absolutely what it needs to be, though, and it should never be changed. It's everything leading up to it that leaves it lacking.

It was nice to finally get my hands on the source material of the two Devilman anime series I've seen. The second half of this volume remains untouched in animated form, and it's for the best. Maybe I'll get better context on volume 2, but the stories seem like filler and little more (other than hinting further at there being more to Ryo than meets the eye). But the story about Hitler was absolutely unnecessary with unnecessarily stereotyped Jewish characters presented. Otherwise a good quick read. Go Nagai is quite the interesting creator. That sentence could probably have been the whole review.

Devilman is a witty lightning bolt of a manga that defies age. The art has just the right amount of detail and subverts so many expectations. Nudity is playful, experimental and lighthearted. Nagai takes us on a journey to hell, and he uses every tool available as an artist to get us there.
