While I mostly enjoyed this story, the ending was disappointing.

3.5 stars - a pretty quick and interesting read, for the most part it wasn't too surprising until the very unusual and unexpected ending.

I absolutely loved the beginning 90 percent of this book, but the end was one plot twist after another, it was almost overkill. I was so into the whole Michael/Alice romance thing and was incredibly surprised about how that turned out. So yes, I would recommend, but also omg.

I just felt like the second half of the story took a drastic turn from the first. Alice was such a boring, unlikable character. I was more interested in Janie but I feel like she was just swept under the rug completely out of nowhere and then suddenly we're focusing solely on Alice? 😒

It was about a 2, so I'll call it a 2.5. Spooky for fucking sure. Fun little twist at the end

Entertaining book for both older youth and adults, the story takes place in the 1920's and the main character is a woman who fights hard to establish herself in a man's world, as a psychologist. While administering school tests she meets a young girl who has memories that appear not to be reincarnation and through the journey to sort it all out, the main character wrestles with dark memories of her own. Well written, enjoyable to read and holds many twists made for a good read.

3.5 stars.

This was a very difficult rating for me because how could I ever rank [a:Cat Winters|5351847|Cat Winters|https://d.gr-assets.com/authors/1402093683p2/5351847.jpg] below 4 stars? From the day I first read [b: In the Shadow of Blackbirds|13112915|In the Shadow of Blackbirds|Cat Winters|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1348721608s/13112915.jpg|18286614], I knew that Cat Winters would be one of my favourite authors. From the eerie and creepy atmosphere she evokes, to her strong, unique and often stubborn female characters, there is literally nothing that this woman can write that I won't read.

That being said, [b: Yesternight|25566506|Yesternight|Cat Winters|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1457009942s/25566506.jpg|45364936] is by far my least favourite of Winters' novels. I don't know if it's because it's meant for adults, or if I just didn't jive well with the characters, but it fell short of my expectations. To be honest, the last .5 stars was awarded only because of that amazingly creepy ending.

[b: Yesternight|25566506|Yesternight|Cat Winters|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1457009942s/25566506.jpg|45364936] is just as eerie and suspenseful as its predecessors. But I just couldn't develop a relationship with Alice, our main character. Throughout Part I of the book, I was only somewhat interested in her story. It wasn't until the last 20% or so where I really felt invested in her story. Maybe it's because the majority of the story isn't actually about her, but about a little girl named Janie who claims to have lived a past life as Violet Sunday.

The problem is - you spend the entire novel expecting to find out the horrendous truth behind Violet Sunday's death, and the reason that she has been 'reincarnated' in little Janie O'Daire. I'm not going to lie, the actual truth is disappointing. And so was the truth about Alice's story later on in the book. While these little twists were definitely unexpected, they kind of left me confused and waiting for more.

That being said, it's still a suspenseful and beautifully written book. I will continue to read anything this magnificent woman writes.
