3.5 stars. A beautiful sweet friends to lovers romance.
This is, simply put, a watered down Romance novel for young adults. It's got stellar dialogue, but the characters are flat and predictable. In fact, I found nearly everything about the book predictable. The "mystery" of the novel is something the reader can guess about twenty pages in, and it's obvious how everything will work itself out.
Honestly, though, it wasn't unenjoyable, but I don't want to read books that leave no element of surprise for me. By the middle of the book I was reading for the dialogue, but even that got stale partway through due to recycled romance novel dribble in the narration. You've read this book before, a fact that will become abundantly clear once the story gets rolling. If you like that sort of thing....then I guess you'll love the book. As for me, I'm over it.

this book was awesome i loved it even though most of the stuff were expected but it was really good and funny and kinda romantic although not much
I have to admit, this protagonist felt a lot more bland than what I've come to expect from Sarah MacLean. Though the premise of the story was nice, I just couldn't get into it.
The Season is a romance with a historical bent. Readers who adore Jane Austen may enjoy a romance set in the same Regency time period although Austen's novels are more solidly entertaining and written. Alex is a headstrong, intelligent, and beautiful aristocrat who has it all. But she does not desire to become merely a simpering object of beauty and grace. Despite her strenuous objections, she finds herself debuting in her first London Season, expected to play her role and find a suitable matrimonial match. Alex and her two closest friends, Ella and Vivie, join her as they waltz through the season hoping to remain strong in their convictions to marry only for love. A mysterious and underhanded plot to do away with a dashingly handsome young Duke while undermining the British Empire in their fight against Napoleon drives the plot and blossoming romance. Chaste and romantic, girls looking for a sweet if predictable romance will swoon for The Season.
Frothy and the main characters are as immature as their ages suggest. Not as fun as the other MacLean novels.
This book is a prime example of why you shouldn't judge a book by its cover. The cover photo led me to believe this book was going to be what Anna Godbersen's [b:The Luxe|1254951|The Luxe (Luxe, #1)|Anna Godbersen|http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51sRUR%2B7c0L._SL75_.jpg|1243729] series always gets described as: Gossip Girl in another time period.
Instead, this book was immensely fun, similar in tone to Patricia C. Wrede and Caroline Stevermer's [b:Sorcery and Cecilia] series (which I adore!). The characters were very likeable, and while I figure that most proper young ladies did not wander about kissing men in libraries and solving murder/espionage cases, I certainly enjoyed this story of a girl who most definitely did. :D
Also, cover photo aside, the design of this book - font, and the LOVELY borders on the chapter and title pages - was absolutely stellar. I just kept flipping through to drool over it (not literally, thank goodness). And to be fair: although I thought the cover photo was WAY too modern for the book, they DID get all the girls' coloring right, and even had them in the correct colors for what they wore to one of the balls. That was impressive. :)
I will be looking forward to more from this author!!
