Having a plot to carry the story forward is a big thing that keeps me reading, and something you obviously don't get from short story collections. On top of that, I've had trouble finding books that recapture the enjoyment I felt of reading anthologies as a kid. Despite all of that, this anthology is a fun little collection. Not every story is a winner but there's some genuinely fun ones and it's got a real variety to it ranging from scifi, to supernatural horror, to just 'normal' fiction.
The main drawback is there's really no meat to the stories. They're kind of all cool what-if ideas that leave me wanting more. Some of them resemble some of the author's other work I've read, so some of these may have even been jumping off points for larger stories.
It's a fun read. As an aside this book lacks some of the typical content warnings you expect from horror such as explicit gore, horrific child murder, alcoholism, rampant sexism and racism, etc. That's a big positive.
