I don't think I enjoy 3-5 page short stories, especially one right after another.

Okay so Small Horrors definitely surprised me. At first, I wasn’t really feeling it, the stories are super short, and it took me a minute to adjust to that. But once I got used to it, I actually started enjoying the quick-hit creepiness. Some of the stories legit got under my skin. The scariest ones weren’t even super graphic, it was more about the unknown or how the story just… ended without really ending? That unsettling feeling of not knowing what happens next kinda makes it worse in the best way. Overall, if you’re into fast, spooky stories that mess with your head a little, it’s worth a read. Just don’t expect every single one to hit the same.

It was just ok. Which hurts for me to say about a Darcy Coates. There are 50 stories in 250 pages, so these stories are truly SHORT. Many struggled to find strength in their plots and some were downright silly. I kept wanting to see a Malerman style creation of a through line with other novels she’s written. Like have a couple of characters from the various books overlap into each other’s stories. Or give me some unique town names like Goblin & Samhattan. As much as I don’t like most of Malerman’s work, I love how he has unique settings woven into his stories to create unity. I wish Coates did similar. Anyway, the short stories were fun back packed depth and memorability.
