How refreshing to get back to Skip Beat. I just picked up volumes 28 and 29 at the library. I've finished 28 and can't wait to start 29. Finally something happens in this volume to move the plot forward, but we don't realize it until the end.
Much of the volume is full of the melodramatic silliness I've come to love/hate in this series. Ren is doing a car stunt during a shoot and nearly hits a little boy. This brings back some painful memories of his youth - when he was a teenager. It's a little confusing, but it seems like he had a very good friend named Rick. Rick was killed in what I assume was a car accident. Ren must have been driving and he blames himself.
For years, Ren has blocked off the darkness of his guilt and anger as Kuon. To survive, he completely abandoned both the name and the mindset of Kuon. When everything comes rushing back after the almost-accident, he's trapped in a dark place. It's only the touch of Kyoko's hand that brings him back.
There's a really cute scene where Kyoko and Ren go grocery shopping and then Ren cooks dinner for Kyoko. It's not the romantic scene that you'd imagine it to be, but really funny. Poor Ren is a terrible cook. The two bond over the battle to eat the awful meal.
The volume ends with a pivotal scene. Kyoko sees the light!!

Learning more about Ren is my favorite thing about the Heel Sibling arc. I love back stories and reasons the characters are the way they are. It just makes a nice bow on the story.

And suddenly a turn to the dramatic! Or, well, let me correct myself, Skip Beat has always been dramatic. And suddenly the drama is all played very seriously?!? I suppose there was no other way to communicate Ren's backstory but I much prefered the second half of the volume when we went back to our Two Protaganists and Their Hilariously Weird Ways of Coping. Ren can be quite funny when he's interacting with Kyoko! I shudder to think the kind of story he's be in without her. Everything would be so serious all the time. 3.5 stars

I loved seeing how sweet and concerned Kyoki is over Ren after the driving incident. How scary that was! Has he finally snapped? What was the accident in his past exactly? I want to know!! And then Ren's cooking!!! LOL! I think I will pass if invited to dinner. But I loved the backstory we get behind why and what it means for him. Kyoko is really starting to open up in this one but I worry how Ren is battling his past so fervently. And how I want to know more about what happened to cause it all!! Of course the President and his antics never fail to amuse me! He is such a meddler!
