I think fans have long wanted and dreamt of this story and games POV. I don’t know if it’s time elapsed or rushed writing but this sadly wasn’t the story I was hoping for. Some aspects were good, but I felt like the cameos from other characters were so heavy handed it took me out of his story. Plus the lack of build of the romance of Haymitch and Lenore left a lot to be desired and made the story payoff feel mid. I liked the arena aspects but it was hard to invest in characters when they seem to die as soon as they’re introduced and with little story impact. I just feel like it could’ve gone so much deeper with more subtle and intellectually complex call backs/references to the other books.  I understand the structure of the reaping>train>prep>interview>games was necessary but it felt like a waste of the readers time. Was hoping for MORE and better, but still enjoyed a dip in the universe I first fell in love with in the trilogy.

I have always llved Suzanne Collin's every-chapter-leaves-a-cliffhanger style that makes reading these books extremely fast paced. I wanted to read this one because I was interested in Haymitch's games. It was interesting to get the true POV and to know both actual version of events as well as the Capitol edited version and the bits we learned from the main series. Great to see characters we know from Katniss' books make appearances especially characters who become important in the 2nd and 3rd books.

Keep on giving me more hunger games books, it scratches that itch that the original books gave!

To keep it as simple as possible, the next time Suzanne Collins wants to write a book, I would prefer her to straight punch me in the stomach as many times as she needs to instead.
