This book delves more into how the games became what they were in the hunger games trilogy. It also develops some of the more questionable characters and adds backstory that makes them more human or at least understandable.

This very much reads like just another hunger games, if messier. Much like how the 80’s/90’s were compared to current standard of safety and operations. I had hoped the storyline would extend past Haymitch’s games to the building of the revolution and a pov of training tributes and general life in the capital. But it doesn’t in any detail.

I also found the plot devices and certain characters to just be remakes of other plot devices and characters in the series. Only the small details changed, which I found disappointing. The amount of songs was also overkill and repetitive for my tastes; they just don’t translate well onto the written page.

What do I even say… this was ONE hell of a book. Wow, how gut wrenching it was to read Haymitch’s story. That boy going through all of that, absolutely unbelievable. I think it was really interesting how we god to learn so much more about the propaganda aspect in the capital. CANT WAIT FOR THE MOVIE!

I really enjoyed reading this, I enjoyed the insight into Hamish’s games and the emphasis on propaganda and how his experiences shaped the character we knew in the original trilogy.

I thought it was really interesting how the little bit we knew of his games from the original series
was a  heavily edited version created by the capital to be taken out of its original context, essentially rewriting history.
  Very interesting masterful writing.

I don’t think I could ever recommend this as an actual literal prequel though, it definitely needs to be read in the order it was written. But phenomenal writing, highly recommend!

I've been skeptical of the Hunger Games prequels. I wasn't sure if they were a cash grab or not. I'm still not sure about the Snow one, but I feel like this one was worth it. Explaining how Haymitch got to be the way he is was worth reading to me. I do think the glimpses of Snow's book we see in this one is fine. It made me want to reread the whole series so I could see how things intertwined.
The onlyt thing I struggled with is that I feel like Haymitch was against Katniss choosing Mags, Beetee and Wiress as allies in Catching Fire, but they were important parts of his time in this book. I feel like Mags at least he would have been supportive of.
