More violent, disturbing, harrowing, and disheartening than the rest of the Hunger Games series- which is saying a ✨LOT✨

A worthy prequel to The Hunger Games trilogy and it still managed to keep the plot interesting and surprising, despite us already knowing part of the story (and thus feeding further into that idea of propaganda). The characters were really well defined and nuanced, and I felt strongly towards lots of them and their sordid outcomes, even more minor characters.
The plot was well-woven and incorporated references to the other books; I did feel at times some references and minor characters were not needed (it felt like they may be partly there for fan service), but for the most part it was a really moving and compelling read.

This is a fantastic prequel to the original Hunger Games Trilogy. Given its protagonist is Haymitch, the connections to the original books are very explicit. It’s basically the generation of Katniss’ parents with a few that are slightly older. This book even makes the other prequel “A Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes” a better book in retrospect. FANTASTIC
