i went into this read blind thanks to my dissertation supervisor who highly recommended the edible woman to me so i could refine my dissertation proposal! and i’m proud to say, after reading this text, that it is now one of my primary texts for my dissertation!

Marian is a woman in 1950s Canada embodying the societal expectations of women in a highly patriarchal and traditional society! she is on the brink of marriage, despite her friend’s controversial and opposing views on her decision, yet doubts arise when Marian discovers that by becoming a wife, she will have to give up everything she loves in life, even eating!

Atwood’s writing is always so enriching and inspiring that i just new i would love this book for the get go! Marian’s characterisation and development from a restricted to a free and re-defined woman was truly inspiring! i also loved the change in narrative style, from 1st person to 3rd, the book adapted in order to show Marian’s struggle and journey as she lost and re-found her feminine identity!

giving this a 4 star rating as the start was a bit slow in my opinion, but other than that i highly rate this read!!

It was interesting to read Atwood’s first published novel and see where she started as well as have a look at the social issues women in the 60s faced.  The book leaned heavily on literary devices and symbolism.  I think this could have been a good novella or short story but lacked enough substance to be a full length novel.

I was given this on the plane to Florida and I read it for the entire flight and I really liked it! I could read Atwood forever and ever, everything she does is so intentional and interesting. Not too much plot, it was really just about a woman having an existential crisis about not wanting to settle down and get married but feeling that she has no way out of that life. I’d say 3.5 stars because I was a tad bored but overall I did enjoy.

Damn this was so boring. I wished I had spent my time reading something else.

This is Atwood's first novel, and I think if you didn't live through the '60s as a grown woman, it might be hard to appreciate. But if you read it to learn about the time when women were still chattel even though the world was oh so modern, it might open your eyes.
