I loved the start of this book and saw pieces of myself in the main character Marian. Although she's a typical young woman, there's this sense of her being on the outside looking in. She feels confined by her life but is too caught up in it and worried about offending people to make any changes, so she gets involved with someone new and ends up letting that relationship force the issue.
As the book went on I got frustrated by her choices and passivity, and I didn't really get the ending.

I enjoyed this but some of it felt quite slow and dated. You can tell it is written half a century ago!

slow-paced

Quite slow paced for my usual taste but full of feminine rage and incredibly sharp and insightful. This is a slow, reflective dismantling of a woman’s sense of self under societal pressure.
