Sometimes a book finds you when you didn't know that you'd need it. Often, such a finding is a surprise. Well, what do you know: a young Atwood novel found me and I found it delightfully acerbic, engagingly wounded, and wholly wonderful as only Atwood's keen eyes can be.
Incidentally, there are a few lines of Duncan's on the Canadian culture of graduate students in English that ring as true today as they did in the late, late '60s when this was written – though not the dismissive lines, unfortunately.

The blueprint ft. some tedious sections that really took the wind out of its sails at times.
My favorite part about Margaret Atwood is that she puts zero effort into writing her male characters. #respect

I was hoping for much more symbolism in this novel and it might have been there but I think it was weighted under the characters' confusing antics and choices. It reminded me of the crazy, discombobulated romp of Alice in Wonderland. Marian keeps interacting with so many self absorbed, weird and disturbing characters with actions that seem "normal" while I felt more connected to some of Marian's "bizarre" choices like hiding under the bed when she was overwhelmed. I feel that the summary and cover art pointed towards a different story then what was written. Marian's thoughts around her horrid imaginings towards food seem rushed and glanced over when the cover art and summary described it as the main appeal. There really isn't much connection to the overarching idea of how this woman is being emotionally and mentally consumed by the many others in her life it just seems like she is nervous about getting married and might have second thoughts, surface issues really. I deeply connect with that idea/thought/feeling ( of being consumed by others) as I feel many females/ caregivers do as well and it just wasn't what I was hoping for. But nonetheless, it is a great read.
I know this is so mean of me, but this read like a Woody Allen film
Not really reading this book so much as I’m just staring at the words listlessly. I feel so little for the main character.
Love Atwood, but not my favourite.
