3 1/2 stars. Marian is a young woman in 1960s Toronto (unnamed) who works for a consumer research firm. She is college educated, lives with a roommate and has a serious boyfriend, Peter. After Marian and Peter become engaged, Marian's appetite starts to go haywire. One food after another, starting with meat, eliminates itself from her diet. She isn't anorexic, she is simply repulsed by many foods she used to enjoy, much like what happens in pregnancy. Her main concern isn't her health, but what people will think about her weird behavior. She befriends a young English grad student, Duncan. Duncan is completely self-absorbed, unstable, and prone to lying. Although the storyline is slightly bizarre, and I sometimes wondered about Marian's motivations, I really enjoyed it. This would be a good book discussion group choice. Atwood is a wonderful writer, and however wacko things get, she always ties it down to reality eventually. I've read several other books by her, but not recently.
