This is an easy 5 stars book. James Clavell has quickly become one of my favorite writer after Shogun and Taipan. They are both top tier books.
Clavell is an expert in Asian culture and he can blend both European and Asian culture together. The relationship between Dirk Straun and May-May always make me smile and I can’t stop reading them.
Culum is basically a Blackthorne of Taipan. He got dropped off in the new world with very little experience and face a significant culture shock. Reading through his struggles and adapt to the new culture has been one of my highlights in this book.
But for me, one of my favorite part of the book is all the side characters. They are all well written and all of their stories are very interesting and make this book entertaining throughout. Gordon Chen and Mary Sinclair are definitely my favorite. I’ve heard that Gordon Chen will be in the next book so I’m super pumped to continue the Asian Saga.
I predict that the 3 coins and favors that Dirk Straun has agreed in this book will have consequences in the following book so let’s see.

I first read this novel about 25 years ago. It is even better this time than it was the last.

I got this book from my boyfriend as part of my birthday gifts, as I enjoyed the first part of this Asian saga, Shogun. I loved Shogun and thought this would have a lot to live up to.
At first I thought it didn't have a patch on it, as the first couple of chapters were all on ships and was so full of new characters that I couldn't keep up. However, as the book progressed I began to enjoy it more and more and ended up so enthralled by the characters and plot that I finished this epic novel in 4-5 days.
The characters are so rich that you feel worried, dislike and compassion alongside them. I had a favourite and I had ones I hated. A book that can make you feel these emotions is a great one.
Though parts of this is gruesome, it was less so than Shogun and had humour throughout.
As I neared the end of the book, I started to worry that the ending was going to be unsatisfactory because there seemed a lot to resolve and so few pages left to do so. However, I ended up being satisfied and shocked by the ending.
I found the historical aspects of this book really interesting, especially as, though I love oriental culture, I don't know much about the founding of Hong Kong. I wasn't interested in the ship aspect of it, but the plot is so rich that you don't need to be to enjoy this novel.
Highly recommend this book.
