This book was exactly perfect for me! I needed a good classic fantasy after reading other genres for a bit. This book reads kind of like a "chosen one teenager" trope if the main character failed as often as he succeeded. I genuinely had no idea if he was going to accomplish his tasks or even make it out of the book alive, but I loved every minute of it. I ate it up and can't wait to read more of the series!

So this is a re-read for me and it is also the first book I have used sticky tabs to mark parts of the books I had thoughts and feelings about.

and BOY did this book made me have lots of thoughts and feelings.

I do like the way that Robin Hobb world builds throughout the story.

The town clings to the rocky black cliffs much like limpets and barnacles cling to the pilings and quays that venture out into the bay.

I also really like the way that she describes people in her writing, I could really picture the way people should look.

But I had never seen a man marked as he was, with scores of tiny pox scars, angry pink and reds like small burns, and livid even in the lamp's yellow light.

I really bonded with the characters, she had written and liked how they developed from beginning to the end. The characters had relationships with each other that you could feel.

The story was really interesting and I want to find out what happens in the next books. I am adding it to my June TBR

5/5 Stars.
If I could I would give this an infinite amount of stars. I am so, so, so glad that nine years after reading this book for the first time, my love and appreciation for it remain the same.

Second read through and still just as enthralling. Really wish I could read this for the first time again but this second time round was enjoyable for spotting little references that now make more sense having read the entire series previously.

The bond between fitz and the animals really spoke to me, which made the bad times veeeery difficult for me to read through. The twists were unexpected and although some I wished never happened, I wasn’t too mad about them in the end. HOWEVER - can’t get over the dogs
