Disclaimer: I received a free review copy of this book at ALA Midwinter 2013. All quotes are based on an uncorrected text.

Trigger Warning: This book deals with rape.

Golden Boy opens with a graphic rape scene that sets the tone for the type of subject matter being dealt with—all the way through it is emotionally heavy and issue-oriented. Modern family dynamics, sexual and gender identity and cultural attitudes towards gender all come under the microscope.Read More

4 1/2 stars. Despite the really emotional subject matter, this book still felt enjoyable to read. I really liked the main character - his struggles felt real and his reactions genuine. Really thoughtful and excellent book. Highly recommended.

As the plot unfolded I was so mad that it's good this book gave me so many enemies. Hunter, for screwing everything up just because he could. And Karen, though she might not deserve it, who's best intentions sometimes went crooked- who couldn't hate her for how she treated Max during the ordeal? She was constantly pushing him with identity questions when she didn't know the whole story, ARGH! I hate her for never completely believing him when Max tells her he wholly identifies as a boy.
Though I was glad I read it. I have never even heard the term intersex before, and I'll admit when I started reading this I just thought it was another term for being gay. I'm glad I know now, though, and I could really empathise with Max's situation because I'd feel really horrible if I was half guy and half girl too when all I really want to be is a girl.
It really sucks that Max had to go through all that shit. (I was going to say crap but that's not a strong enough word for what Max had to go through).

overall the book was better than average, but i would have loved to see more discussion about max's understanding of his sexuality beyond his fears of never being able to have heteronormative sex. in other words, I wish the book was a bit more queer in its portrayal of sexuality and sexual acts.
