Golden Boy was a wonderful and thought-provoking read. Tarttelin is a natural storyteller and her writing was a joy to read. The story contains many different and interesting characters and deals with subjects from Aspergers to depression, not forgetting the main point - intersexuality. It's a coming-of-age story that might not be close to our own, but is important to hear none the less.

It's a coming-of-age story that might not be close to our own, but is important to hear none the less.
This story is so touching and heart-wrenching in so many different ways. Max finds his voice through unimaginable, yet believable events in his life. Really this is a story about relationships, society's views of people who are different and coming of age.

Menino de Ouro é um livro sensacional com uma história nada fácil. É um livro bem pesado e com temas de extrema importância além de espinhosos. Sinceramente, não tem como uma pessoa não ser tocado de alguma maneira por tudo que acontece na vida de Max.
O livro narra a vida de Max que é uma pessoa intersexual. Ou seja ele não é nem homem e nem mulher. A história começa depois que algo muito ruim acontece com ele e acaba desencadeando uma série de problemas na família dele. Uma família aparentemente perfeita começa a desandar.
Eu simplesmente a forma que a Abigail abordou a intersexualidade. Com muita didática ela fala sobre sexualidade e gênero. Sobre doenças sexuais, gravidez, aborto, depressão. É sensacional. A forma como ela mostra que diferença é não é nada demais. Que tudo bem ser diferente. É de aquecer o coração. A forma como ele mostra como o Max lida com isso e as pessoas ao seu redor o tratam.
É um livro de grandes personagens. Todos ali. Acho que não tenho nenhuma reparação a fazer. No entanto, os meus preferidos foram o pai do Max e a médica que o atende. É através deles que nós aprendemos muitas coisas importantes sobre sexualidade e gênero e a forma de como tratar pessoas que não se encacham na forma padrão que a sociedade ainda prega. Eu não faria nenhuma mudança nessa história. Ela é simplesmente fenomenal.
Esse é o tipo de livro que eu adotaria em sala de aula caso fosse professor para discutir sobre gênero e sexualidade. É a história que a sociedade e os jovens brasileiros precisam ler nessa onda de ignorância que está se firmando no país. É um livro extremamente esclarecedor.

Tarttelin has created very distinctive voices for each of her characters which in no way hinders the story from moving along, in fact, her style amplifies the pacing.
A beautifully written book that had me on the edge of my seat through the first half, written about a boy named Max who is intersex. The story was told in alternating perspectives from Max himself, to his brother, to his parents, to the doctor that treated him, and from the perspective of his girlfriend.
Max is the victim of a sexual assault that made reading difficult in the beginning and the rest of the book is watching the train wreck of family dynamics and how Max works through this as he questions his own sexual identity. If you can't handle books like that, this might not be a pick for you.
I wouldn't say this is anything like Middlesex or Annabel, two other books I have read on intersex, although I loved both of those books just as much as this. This is definitely a very contemporary take on what it would be like as an intersex teenager now, with all the scary things that teenagers do in it.
This was definitely a strong debut from this author. The ending did lag a bit for me and there were definitely voices that I liked in it more than others, but I enjoyed the book overall!
I look forward to reading more from her.

While I had some minor problems with some characters, I really, really loved this book. It was heartbreaking and emotional, but also so educational and something that I think everyone should read and learn more about.
I loved Max as a main character and I adored Archie and how her POV added so much to the educational side of this book. I also really enjoyed Daniel's POV for so many reasons and I think it was a great choice to add his perspective to this story.
I would highly recommend this book and it's something that will stay with me for a long time.
