This was a good book that taught me more about a condition I know very little about. I wanted to cry at basically every point in this book beacuse it was just so heartbreaking for Max to have to deal with so much. I really felt for him.
He felt so alone and like a freak and I wanted to tell him that I love him and give him a hug and all that.

I'm kinda conflicted on how I feel about Karen because she didn't respect Max and his opinions but she was trying to do what she thought was best for his sake. Also I love Steve for supporting Max and wanting to know Max's opinions on things and not deciding for Max. Idk why I just really respect that.

One of the best books I've read in a long time

I was hesitant to pick this book up originally after my partner read it and gave me some trigger warnings *rape, attempted suicide, depression*

But when I finally picked it up it has really opened my eyes to the world of being intersex. Seeing how being born intersex can be seen as a research topic for doctors and specialists, taking huge interest into what’s between someone’s legs. Also seeing the impact it can have on family life and the decisions that need to be made early in life.

It truly makes you think more deeply about how gender is just a construct and it’s as binary as we initially think it is.

Tarttelin did a great job of displaying all the different voices throughout the novel.

This book is incredibly heartbreaking and vivid. It was amazingly written. I loved how the author included many different point of views, and each character had their own voice and personality and strengths. They all felt very real and very multidimensional to me. It was a very, very good book.

Just as a note, I found the beginning especially to be very triggering - It is very heavy.

Really enjoyed this book. I never read the synopsis so wasn't sure what to expect. The opening scene shook me up and I had to put the book down for a while and go for a walk to clear my head before I could lift it again. And I'm really glad I did. Max is such a sweet, big hearted child and I found myself really involved with his character as the plot unfolded. Normally books that switch the first person narrative annoy me but I didn't mind it here - you get to see the story unfold from differing points of view, from well rounded characters. Sympathies get pulled in different directions and the book is also about the breakdown of a family unit as it is about intersexuallity and teenage pregnancy. A heartbreaking read.

4.5*

TRIGGER WARNING: VERY graphic rape scene early on in the book.

Liked it. A coming-of-age story, but with a twist - the main character was born intersex (sharing both male and female characteristics). I knew very little about this condition before reading. The author did a very good job of informing the reader about the condition as well as realistically addressing (through the changing point of view of characters) the way it can affect people, their family and their relationships. Would be a very interesting book club read.

This review's going to be a little bit choppy, so please just bear with me.

This book left me speechless. As I read it, I kept thinking about what I would want to say when I wrote my review, and now I have no idea what to write. This book had a truly beautiful message, and was full of so many lessons and new ideas, and it was just amazing.

By the time I got to the end of the book, it felt as though my heart had broken into a million pieces, and yet I loved the story all the same. I laughed, I cried, and I think I found a new favorite book.

The characters were amazing, but there were some that I had mixed feelings about. For example, his mom and dad. I started the book liking his mom, and not really caring all that much for his dad, by the end of the book my feelings on the both of them had changed completely. I ended up really liking his dad, although I didn't agree with all of his decisions. His mom was different though. She seemed okay in the beginning, and then it was like suddenly she had a huge personality change, and I didn’t like her new attitude. I wish that she hadn't done the things that she did, but at the same time I realize why the author had her do that.

I absolutely LOVED this book, and I really wish it was something that everyone could read and love, but I know that won't happen no matter how much I wish for it.

(Sorry for any grammatical errors!)
