re read this to see if middle school me was right to call it my favorite book for so long. emphatically, yes. absolutely incredible and devastating and beautiful. i think there’s a bit of Charlie in all of us

A lesson on the importance of being present in the moment and taking action and not just being a wallflower. A story about a kid named Charlie and his first year of high school, making friends, discovering books and music and drugs, first relationships and forst loves, and dealing with his family and learning about something he's kept repressed for so long. It's funny in its small moments without ever sacrificing it's sincerity, and though my adolescence was very unlike Charlie's I'm almost positive everyone who was ever a freshman can relate to one or more characters and situations in this book. I wouldn't say it makes me nostalgic and while I wouldn't say it's a particularly happy story (it is but it's not only a happy story if you catch my drift) there's something to be gained from reading this. Especially if you never have.

Thought this was a typical YA novel until the end made my jaw drop. Heartbreaking and beautiful, this book captures the tumultuous teenage years.

I think this might be one of the most beautifully and brilliantly written coming-of-age stories that I've ever read, and I truly believe that it will haunt me for the rest of my life. 

I loved the format of a story being told through letters to a mysterious person, whom we never discover the identity of, I feel like it gives the story a truly unique feeling to it that wouldn't be the same if it was written through a typical narrative. Charlie's complexity unfolded like the petals of a flower, delicately and with grace, and his story really moved me - when I reached the halfway point, I found myself physically unable to put the book down until I'd finished it, and even then I was left wanting more. In a good way. This book both spoke to the teenage version of myself inside of me who is still longing for acceptance and a space just to be, and the adult version of myself who found both of those things. 

Thank you, Charlie, for your story and thank you, Chbosky, for letting me be a listener to it.
