Enjoyable! I'm still getting used to the graphic novel format, so I don't think I can give this book it's full due. But I still really enjoyed this story. The detail and the world-building was incredible! Loved the magic and learning how it worked. And of course, what's a good story without an element of mystery to it? And a talking tree. Haha! Lots of fun, and I plan on keeping my eye out for more. I want to find out what's in Nyneve's past (and her family) that makes her so interesting to those who know her family's history.

So, wow. I, like many others I see, received a special edition of volume 1 of Witchy in an Owlcrate box. It's sat around my shelves since I received it and I fully thought I wouldn't particularly enjoy it. Well, I'm planning a trip to the used bookstore and I thought maybe I'd read this this afternoon and be done with it so I could add it to my pile of trade ins for store credit. Little did I realize at the time, I actually picked up a winner for my midday read.

I'm really surprised but I actually really really enjoyed this. Sometimes I get overwhelmed by these young adult fantasy stories with so much diversity and different races, genders, species etc I find it hard to keep characters straight and I find in some cases authors end up being really performative with their inclusivity. But I don't know, the author just did a really great job with this. I felt like it was so seamless in this story and didn't stick out in a IM TRYING REALLY HARD TO BE HIP WITH THE TIMES. Instead it felt like ya, there's lots of pronouns and sexualities and types of fantasy characters and it's subtle but definitely there and that's because it's normal just like in real life. I loved that.

Loved the story and concept, I thought I would be iffy on the art but I really felt comfy with that too.

I see it's a webcomic so I might read more online but honestly I'd like to own volume 2, it was that good.

Queer Asian witches, whose power is determined by the length of their hair set in a semi-tropical high fantasy backdrop? Sign me up.

The art is gorgeous and the way Kindle now has an option to move through comics frame by frame really gives it a cinematic feel. While cute and sometimes whimsical, heavy topics are also addressed from the jump (TW: there is the death of a parent in the opening).

I suspect that this is going to be a slow burn, rivals-to-lovers with the trans character, Prill, but I'm not too sure. Not enough evidence yet, but they have an interesting start.

This was a fast but fun read and I'm excited to read Volume II!

If you like fantasy and graphic novels, read this. I loved it. The magic is really interesting, the characters and their dynamics are interesting and make me want to keep reading, the worldbuilding manages to be complex despite the graphic novel being quite short, and there's a lot of snark and wit in here, which I always love.

I would definitely read more in this world.
