Loved this story... the movement and flow of the characters feels very much like animation, which makes action seamless. Pacing of character development is awesome and exquisite handling of a trans character and overall complex world with complex characters.

OH MY FREAKING GOD I LOVE THIS BOOK!!
It’s so magical and I can relate to the main character so much because of her relationship with her hair. Like I always shave my head when I get tired of my hair (basically once a year) and I just adore her so much. There’s also a trans character, who’s like I’m a girl period and I love her!! There’s also a non- binary character and UGHH. Also I have no idea if there’s gonna be a second book, but there be because that ending wrecked me and I need more. The art is beautiful like, I have no complaints about this book at all honestly.

I was provided an ARC via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Witchy is a graphic novel set in a world where magic comes from the length of one's hair, but when one's hair is too long, the government takes it as a threat and executes them. Our main character, Nyneve, is about to go through circumscription but she really doesn't want to be part of the army since her dad was one of the people burnt at the stake by the government.

I liked the drawing style, it was very unusual, in a good way. The plot was very good too and I really liked the characters. I felt like it jumped a bit fast at times though and I wished it had been longer on some parts, that it would have explored some things more thoroughly. It was still a great read though and I would love love love for it to have a sequel.

Extrait :
«J’ai beaucoup aimé la diversité présente dans cette histoire. Notamment avec le personnage de Prill qui on apprend est une femme transgenre. C’est présenté de façon tellement naturelle que ça fait réellement plaisir de lire cela. De plus avec le dessin de l’auteure, j’avais parfois l’impression que certains personnages avaient un look plutôt androgyne. Je pense personnellement que cela pourrait contribuer à ce que les lecteurs se mettent dans la peau des personnages. »

My Rating : 4

Witchy is a graphic novel about a young witch who lives in a world where magical prowess is measured in the length of your hair.

It’s a pretty quirky premise but it actually matches the art style and story progression pretty well.

Nyneve is a young girl who hides her super long hair because she does not want to be conscripted into the witch guard because they murdered her father. Despite her limited control over her magical abilities, she is accepted into the witch guard and must go on the run to escape them. While on the run she discovers there are more people unhappy with the current political regime and an underground resistance is beginning to form.

It’s a pretty interesting start to a story, but the action does get stalled by its heavy exposition. I get that every fantasy story has to have exposition to explain the world, but this felt like the action was grounded to a halt at times. By the end of the book, I felt like everything had been set up, but not a lot had actually happened.

I do like the characters, though. It is a diverse group, and once again the story sets them up but not much happens to them.

So, overall, this is a solid 3.5 effort, and I would be interested in seeing more, but I don’t think there’s another book out yet, so I guess I’ll just wait...

I really wish I liked this story more. It was really choppy and seemed rushed. I think taking some time to get into character development would have made this book better. I didnt connect with any of the characters and the couple of characters that did seem to have some interesting storylines we only dealt with for 10 pages. I disliked the main character alot. She started out with a decent story but it quickly got taken away by the choppiness of the book. I'm glad it was a free to me book because I would have hated to pay money for it!!

This was an enjoyable read, though, nothing much has happened yet (which is understandable as this only contains the first four chapters). I love the world, but I wanted to know more details about it. I got to know the characters, but I feel like there is much more to uncover and I haven't quite grasped them yet. I guess I'll get the answers I want when I read the next parts of this!

I also adored the illustrations, they're fun and I love how the artist brings life to the pages with them. Overall, this was a good read for me!

Disclaimer: I received this book from Edelweiss. This does not impact my review which is honest and unbiased.

There's so much to love in Witchy. In a society where conscription in mandatory and where your power is determined by the length of your hair, Witchy is an important story about the manipulation of the truth and history. There are secrets hidden behind age, tucked away in safety, waiting. Nyneve is a girl still terrified of the Witch Guard ever since the death of her father. So when conscription rolls around, Nyneve needs to figure out where she stands. Nyneve has all the qualities of my favorite heroines and I'm excited to see how the story progresses - because after that ending, you will know what I mean! It's a story that celebrates the importance of intention, of being tired of fighting a system our who lives, and of being scared.

Ariel included a list of trigger warnings on the Witchy site as follows: "All Pages: The use of hair based persecution in the plot of Witchy may potentially be triggering to readers of certain cultural or religious backgrounds. Reader discretion is advised. Pages 7-8: Parental death. Pages 64-66: Mild transphobia/misgendering. Pages 108-110: Insinuations of suicidal ideation."

I want more of this! I hope there's going to be more of this. Such a fascinating world, and the characters are amazing. Plus, the art really brings the magic to life. Bonus: there's also a diverse cast of characters, and a lot of defiance of gender roles. Such a great read!
