Beautiful art, such a richly imagined world. Did not realize it would have sequels and so now am going antsy over that ending!!!!
The art for this was very cute, which is about the only really good thing I can say for it, aside from all the diversity points it aims for and achieves. Overall, I was left dissatisfied by a preposterous plot, clunky dialogue, more telling than showing (how is that even POSSIBLE in a graphic novel???), and an awkward ending I completely failed to appreciate.

★★★★⭐ | Choosing your own path with all odds against you
In the kingdom Hyalin the length of your hair is a big deal. It determines the strength of your magic, thus short-haired people have fewer possibilities and are less respected. However, sometimes those in power decide that one's hair is too long and such a person is a treat to the country. Such a person is burned. Such a person was Nyneve's father. And now so is Nyneve.
Witchy is a story of choosing your own destiny even with the whole kingdom against you. It's about the fight against society's expectations. About sometimes simply running away when things get too intense. About different ways of standing up for yourself. About pain and about healing. About the sacrifice and about accepting it. About living your true life and about being forced to hide.
Witchy has also and interesting magic system with witches, various ways of channelling one's magic, talking birds, small spirits and so much else.
It's a tale of a controlling ruler and the manipulation from those in power. Of a determined mother. Of a lost father. Of protecting one another and finding friends where you least expect them.
The art style is original and the colours beautiful. The dynamic and cartoonish shapes seem to move the adventure faster and the colours which are a bit pale yet warm set an almost fairy-tale mood.

i loved the world witchy is set in. we get to see some very different environments throughout the story, giving the land some depth and showing us how different it can look depending on where you are. hyalin is a land being ruled by secrets and corruption, and witchy is very much about what that can do to a person.
there are a whole bunch of effortless queer moments just sprinkled throughout the story, which was not something i’d expected because i hadn’t seen anyone mention it, but it made my day. there is also a trans woman in the main cast of characters. i found it slightly uncomfortable that we find out she is trans when everyone is sent to see a medimage of their gender, she at first isn’t let in to see a female one. i love her dearly, though, and it is quickly resolved and she isn’t sent to a male one. another little thing that made the world feel more… i don’t know if inclusive is the right word? safe? is the fact that all characters seem to use they/them pronouns when talking about people whose pronouns they don’t know yet.
all in all i really enjoyed this first volume of witchy. it is very much an unfinished story, it is an ongoing webcomic after all, and feels a lot like just the beginning of something huge.

Love this story. Loved it as a webcomic, adore it in print. Just give me more!
