How does one go from foot soldier to Don in the mafioso? 
Giancarlo didn't plan to do so, but he knew he was in love with the Don, of the enemy, daughter. Catching her on his turf meant he could do as he pleased, so a wedding was the only logical conclusion for Giancarlo.
Upon returning Elena to her father the following day, Giancarlo learned the truth about his parent's deaths and his world spiraled. Plans changed. 
This novella is a perfect holdover if you don't have time to start a whole series.
