First thoughts after reading this book: I loved it! After the Soldier Son trilogy and the first book in the Rain Wild Chronicles, I was slightly sceptical about this book. The first book, Dragon Keeper, was enjoyable, but it felt like not much was happening, and I wasn’t very connected to the characters. But this! I could barely put this book down, and in this, I really got to know the characters and grew in a way that was very pleasing to me. 

If you haven’t tried Robin Hobb’s fantasy, you’re in for a treat! Her stories have elements in them I have not encountered in any other books, her characters are deeply flawed, but you still love the idiots anyway. And don’t even get me started on her villains. They are the worst and best at the same time as is the case of the characters in this book as well. They are complex and feel real. You certainly don’t agree with their actions some of the time, but that’s what makes the story interesting.

The first instalment of this series is basically a set-up for the series to come, and in this book, the events really are in motion. It follows a journey of young dragons and their keepers, trying to find a long-lost city where the dragons could live in peace. The journey is tough on everyone, and the characters grow along the way in more ways than one.

I enjoy Robin Hobb’s writing style: rich in description, without sounding like purple prose. If you’re looking for a book filled with snappy dialogue, then Robin Hobb probably isn’t the author for you. But if you appreciate interesting multi-faceted characters and a rich fantasy world with unique lore, then definitely check her work out. She’s also one of the few authors who can really break your heart, so be warned. 

All in all, this book was such a pleasant experience. Perhaps even too pleasant, and I’m dreading to see what the next book will throw at me. In any case, I can’t wait to read it.

It's funny how memories of a book get distorted with time. I would have sworn the events happening towards the end of book 2 (no spoilers) happened in fact in book 3. And so, while I get a tiny bit tired of Robin Hobb's habit of repeating herself, and her entish ability to take a very long time to say things, I'm actually surprised to see the plot pick up pace in this volume. Well, towards the end at least. I think the Rain Wild Chronicles is the most queer-friendly of all her series even though the world isn't queer-friendly, because it's all about becoming one's true self and taking back one's independence. It feels both invigorating and sadly necessary in our day and age.
