A Rule Against Murder

Louise Penny

I’m going back and reading some of the earlier Louise Penny novels I missed. In general, I’m a fan, but this one was a bit of a chore for me.

Another enjoyable Armand Gamache mystery.

RATING: 3 stars.

Quick read. Cozy mystery, more focused on character study than anything else.

This was so brutal for me. I just could NOT get into this book until the last 50 pages when the murderer who I guessed about 100 pages in was revealed

My fav gamache book so far
dark emotional mysterious reflective tense medium-paced

My favorite so far!

Still better than a lot of mysteries, but not my favorite of hers. Louise Penny is always a fan of the extremely-complicated murder method, and this one is certainly up there (although not the most absurdly convoluted.) But the bigger problem, for me, was that the entire Morrow family as well as most of the other characters were all so desperately unlikable that my only regret was that more people didn't get murdered.

I enjoyed this one a lot more than the 3rd installment in the series. I was getting worried about the number of murders that occurred in Three Pines, and I thought it was going to be obvious who the murderer was because it was obviously not Myrna, Olivier, Gabri, Peter, Clara, or Ruth, and therefore must be the new character. The murder set in a resort near Three Pines, but with a connection to a few of the characters was the perfect way of doing it. The murder was unexpected (not who I thought was going to die) and the murderer was definitely not who I thought was going to be guilty. Very enjoyable.
