Another good story in the Gamache series and the narrator is superb. The Gamache's are away for a break at the Manoir Bellechasse to celebrate their wedding anniversary when a death occurs. It sounds a beautiful location and with Louise Penny's skill you can picture it. A great cast of characters. The Finney family are a family who consider themselves entitled but at war with each other. It was a great read. Loved it and cried in places which didn't look good on my morning walk.
I enjoyed visiting these characters again. The only reason I give it 4 and not 5 starts is because the mystery itself was rather weak. The family drama of the Finneys and insight into some of the series regular characters' backgrounds made this book, but since it is supposed to be a mystery as well, it can't quite rate 5 stars. Still, it's a must read in the series. It's hard to say much else without spoilers so I'll leave it there. Ralph Cosham's audiobook narration continues to be superb.
I understand why people say to keep reading until book 4 - this was the best one by far. I’m excited to pick up the next book, which is the first time I’ve said that about this series.
Penny comes through with another novel that is the perfect balance between a page-turner and book I wanted to savor slowly. She set this novel at a historic Quebec lake resort instead of the town of Three Pines, which was a nice break. I was beginning to wonder how many more people could be killed in Three Pines without wiping out the town's whole population! But Penny still managed to weave some Three Pines characters in when two of the members of the family who has gathered for a reunion at the remote resort happen to be Peter and Clara Morrow. Peter's is a bitter, silently-feuding family, and one of his sisters ends up dead when a statue of their late father falls on her, crushing her. Of course, Armand Gamache just happens to be vacationing at the resort on an anniversary trip with his wife when this happens, and he switches from vacation mode to investigation mode. The case is a challenge, because not only do they have to find a killer, they have to figure out how a multi-ton statue could fall of its pedestal and crush someone. As usual, Penny wraps it all up nicely, and this proved another perfect read.
These books are like popcorn and also make me desperate to move to a small town just outside of Montreal despite not knowing any French

These books just get better and better. I love the mysterious deaths each one brings. Is there just something about that town and the people in it that they are all surrounded by murders??
