Can't believe this is my third time reading this i need to add more books to my library lol. Each time i come out of it wishing for so much more. the writing is underwhelming and the plot is... mediocre. its very much a case of "telling, not showing" whats happening - i find it frustrating that Damen does all the thinking for the reader, and yet is unable to piece together the last plot twist of the story despite real obvious clues. I can't help but wish that there was more fleshing out of the world and the characters and the main character's history- even a couple of flashbacks could have done wonders - everything is told point blank to the reader and it just made me not care about any of the other characters. Damen feels so hurt everytime he looks at Jokaste but i can't even begin to relate because we are barely even introduced to her, never shown her positive features that appealed to him in the first place. I found myself starting to skip paragraphs of pointless set up and easy execution, everything feels so easy and unearned for the main characters - there was never any real tension and if there was it was for a page, and then it was business as usual. The only thing I really found that I liked from this series was Laurent's dialogue and exchange with Damen because it could be sharp and witty and layered with subtext. There are way more issues i have with the series honestly but i'll just leave it at that. This is a callout to myself, find better books to read please!
