Beautifully written and incredibly sad. I didn't fully understand what happened at the end and I wish they'd communicated more. Feel really bad for Hannah and Lydia.

imagine if you were a poor communicator, married a poor communicator, and then gave birth to three poor communicators...
now imagine if you had learned how to communicate your daughter wouldn't have died. that's this book.

I listened to the audiobook version and was wrapped in it from the beginning. The characters were relatable and the storyline, at times sad, also felt like one that was realistic.

It's been months since I finished reading this book so my review won't be as accurate as when I finished it. But I do remember this novel being a hard-hitting story about a family dealing with grief and trauma.

It was heartbreaking to read the different POVs because they would leave you like "if only they would communicate their feelings honestly" but you'd also ruminate and think about your own experience and realize it's not always that easy. Which was one of the main points of the story.

Celeste Ng has perfected the art of gut-wrenching and relatable family drama that'd leave you want more yet also want it to end ASAP.

This is a heavy book. The writing is exquisite, I love all the characters and their development throughout the book. If you come from a dysfunctional family, though, this one might hit you where it hurts. Especially for me the relationship between Nath and Lydia.

Thriller/Mystery, Dysfunctional Family, Trauma

“Dreaming of his future, he no longer heard all the things she did not say.”
